Can ChatGPT complete Form E for me?
Last updated 3 October 2026 · Applies to England & Wales
Not safely, no. ChatGPT, Claude, Gemini and other AI assistants can help you get your bearings - but they cannot produce the official court-ready document, they sometimes state wrong figures and rules with complete confidence, and it is you, not the AI, who signs the statement of truth and carries legal responsibility for every answer on the form.
Where an AI assistant genuinely helps
An AI chatbot is a reasonable starting point for orientation: what financial disclosure is, how Form E fits into the divorce process, what a term like “clean break” broadly means. If a letter from your ex’s solicitor has left you baffled, pasting it in and asking for plain English is a fair use of one.
Be careful trusting it on the detail of the form itself, though. AI explanations of specific Form E questions sound equally authoritative whether they are right or wrong, and the errors are the kind only a family lawyer would catch - a plausible but incorrect account of what a question requires, or of what the court does with the answer. Use AI for the general lie of the land, not as your guide to what a particular question on the form needs from you.
Why a chatbot cannot produce your Form E
The court requires the official form. Form E is a specific 28-page document published by HM Courts & Tribunals Service, and your financial disclosure has to be given on that form - not in a letter, a spreadsheet, or a chat transcript. Even when a chatbot drafts good answers, you are still left transferring them into the official PDF yourself, field by field, across hundreds of fields.
AI assistants make things up. Language models sometimes state figures, thresholds and requirements that are simply wrong - fluently and confidently wrong. In most settings that is an inconvenience. In financial disclosure, a wrong answer goes to the court with your signature underneath it: the court can draw adverse inferences from incorrect or incomplete disclosure, and a financial order can be set aside later if the disclosure behind it turns out to have been false.
Form E is more than your answers. The last page of the form is the Schedule of Documents - a formal checklist where every supporting document (bank statements, payslips, pension valuations, business accounts) is declared attached, to follow, or not applicable. DocReady takes you through all 17 rows as the form sets them out and prints your answer on each. A chat conversation does not build or track this.
You sign the statement of truth - not the AI
Form E ends with a personal declaration that you believe the facts stated in it are true. Proceedings for contempt of court may be brought against anyone who makes a false statement in a document verified by a statement of truth. An AI’s mistake on your form becomes your mistake the moment you sign.
Be careful what you paste into a chatbot
Form E contains your entire financial life - account numbers, salary, pensions, addresses, debts. Before pasting any of it into a general-purpose chatbot, check what the tool stores and whether your conversations are used to train future models; with some tools and settings, they are. Whichever route you choose for completing the form, it should be one where you know exactly where your data goes. What to use instead
A family solicitor
The right choice if your finances are complex - business valuations, trusts, disputed assets - or if proceedings have turned contentious. A solicitor can advise you on strategy and what orders to seek, which no form-completion tool (including DocReady) can do.
A dedicated Form E tool
DocReady asks plain-English questions with guidance written by a practising family law partner at every step, then fills the official HMCTS Form E PDF for you - including the Schedule of Documents on the last page. Free to start, £79 one-time to download the finished form.
The official form, on your own
Form E and the court’s guidance notes are free to download from GOV.UK. This is the slowest route with the least help, but it costs nothing - and for very simple finances it can be enough.
Use AI to get oriented. Use something accountable to produce.
A good rule of thumb: ask a chatbot what a pension sharing order is; do not ask it what your pension is worth, or what question 2.13 requires of you. Anything that ends up on the form itself should come from your own documents and be checked against official guidance - or entered through a tool that is built around the official form and accountable for matching it exactly.
Complete Form E with guidance, not guesswork.
DocReady asks plain-English questions, explains each one the way a solicitor would, and fills the official HMCTS form for you. Free to start - pay £79 only when you’re ready to download.
